Baltinglass Senior Championship 1979

Baltinglass entered this final as underdogs against defending champions Rathnew. Baltinglass were felt by many to be too young and inexperienced as they were fielding several minors in their side. But playing a fast, open, skilful brand of football they raced into an early lead and with 12 minutes to go led 1-8 to 0-4. Then after a Rathnew player had been booked in the words of the Wicklow People corespondent who covered the game "bedlam broke loose. Fighting broke out, spectators swarmed onto the pitch and there was total confusion". The game was abandoned and after a County Board investigation the game was awarded to Baltinglass.
