Baltinglass Senior Championship 1967
For a change Newtown, not St. Patricks, supplied the opposition. Baltinglass won by 0-10 to 0-2 thus proving that they were still kingpins of Wicklow football. Again, this was essentially a team effort, with all players contributing to a clear, fully deserved title. Operating in the half-forward line Larry Norton and Padraig Byrne, son of the then Co. Chairman, Hugh Byrne, were especially prominent. Young Byrne had the distinction of winning his first senior medal in his second ever senior championship game, replacing the injured Willie Wall. He also scored three of his team's ten points, all coming when tension was at its peak point. Admiration was generous for the champions following their performance on this wet Sunday. In winning the title in three successive years, they became out-right winners of the Miley Cup.
On this day, Baltinglass produced sound and constructive football, jumping into top gear for short spells, and some of their passing movements were brilliantly executed. Older hands, Johnny Kenny, John Rogers in goal and John Connell excelled as did Bobby Nolan in his customary striking role. The Nortons and Scotts drew praise for their contribution to victory, as did the entire team. Johnny Kenny scored three points in the first half. Padraig Byme had two. At the interval Baltinglass led 0-5 to 0-1. In the second half, which frequently was all Baltinglass, Kenny scored two points, Byrne and the Norton's one apiece.
Team: John Rogers, John Connell, Ken Browne, Joe Doherty, Charlie Connell, Tom Scott, Pat Rogers, Tony Norton (Capt.), Noel Scott, Andrew Buchanan, Bobby Nolan, Padraig Byrne, Lar Norton.
